Farmers have often been referred to as the ultimate
“stewards” of the environment. After
all, if they do not have access to healthy reliable natural resources such as
air, water and soil they cannot effectively produce a healthy vital crop in
perpetuity. Western Growers members are
family farmers who are concerned about the longevity of their operations and
are committed to not only taking care of the resources they have been entrusted
with but additionally to healthy and vital surroundings be they urban
communities or rural outposts. Having enacted an “Environmental Code of
Concern” over a decade ago Western Growers members continue to work to improve
their operations to ensure they minimize their environmental footprint on the
world.
These pages, links and resources are designed to assist
Western Growers members and others in staying abreast of key environmental
issues in their areas and beyond and equipping them to help address those
issues proactively. The pages are
focused around the areas of air, water and soil quality. In addition, while Western Growers members
have always practiced “sustainable farming” the “Look for the Leaf” program has
been made available here for Western Growers members who wish to adopt and
certify Western Growers sustainability standards.
As always, Western Growers encourages members and others to
provide thoughts and feedback on these pages and how we might make them better
or more useful.
