FDA Lettuce Safety Initiative
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) developed the Lettuce Safety Initiative as a response to the recurring outbreaks of E. coli O157:H7 associated with fresh and fresh-cut lettuce. The Initiative is intended to reduce public health risks by focusing on the product, agents, and areas of greatest concern.
FDA Produce Safety Action Plan
Produce Safety From Production to Consumption: Action Plan to Minimize Foodborne Illness Associated with Fresh Produce Consumption.
Released by the U.S.Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2004. The plan outlined four major objectives:
- Preventing contamination of fresh produce by developing guidance and regulations
- Minimizing the public health impact when contamination of fresh produce occurs
- Improving communication with the produce industry
- Facilitating research related to the contamination of fresh produce
