Governor Jerry Brown today signed legislation allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain state drivers licenses.  In response to concerns expressed by law enforcement and the Governor’s desire to ensure compatibility with federal standards governing state identification documents, the legislation, AB 60 (Alejo, D-Watsonville), was substantially amended in the final hours before the Legislature adjourned for the year last month.

Yesterday, House Democrats tried to inject a sense of urgency into the immigration reform debate by releasing a comprehensive reform bill.  The House Democratic bill is identical to the one that passed the Senate before the July 4th holiday, except it includes a border security section that the House Homeland Security Committee passed during the summer.  Will this bill become law?

Attached, is a letter dated September 27, 2013, which has already been received by a couple of the larger strawberry farming organizations in the County.

As you can see from the letter, the UFW intends to file Notices of Intent to Take Access with the Agricultural Labor Relations Board to take access on October 3, 4 and 5, 2013.  The alleged purpose of the access will be to advise workers of the bipartisan federal legislation to reform national immigration policy.  VCAA suspects that the UFW may be attempting to enlist the support of many of these workers for a protest march or other public media event on Saturday, October 5, which is a day of national mobilization in support of national immigration reform.
