As you may have read in the press, farm labor representatives and the agricultural industry are in the final hours of negotiating a deal over a new program to bring foreign agricultural workers into the United States, as part of a comprehensive immigration bill. One of the remaining issues that must be resolved is setting the pay levels for those workers.

Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) staff has confirmed that Cal/OSHA will issue citations to operations that transport workers on tractor-mounted transportation units (TTUs).  TTUs are commonly used to transport irrigators from one end of a field to the other and for other on-farm transportation.

Cal/OSHA has advised employers that even though it is early in the season, employers are accountable for meeting the heat illness regulations that are in effect in California.  With temperatures rising into the 80s and 90s in some areas of the state, workers could easily be affected by the heat in the fields.
