This week, the California Central Coast Water Board sent an informational update to interested parties in the Lower Salinas Valley Watershed and in the Pajaro River Basin TMDL regarding the State Water Resources Control Board Nonpoint Source (NPS) Grant Program.  The Board’s Financial Assistance Division issued a solicitation notice and is now accepting applications for the Clean Water Act section 319(h) of the program.

Over the past few weeks, there have been delays in the processing of H-2A visa applicants through the State Department. This is due to a system-wide glitch related to software updates that were made and has impacted U.S. visa processing globally.

Western Growers has been working with congressional offices to encourage both quick resolution of this issue and to ask for assistance on expediting H-2A applications. While there may be temporary unavoidable delays in getting H-2A visas processed, there may be opportunity to address concerns on a case-by-case fashion.

The Chairman of Fresno-based Baloian Farms, Ed Baloian, passed away on August 2 at the age of 92. Mr. Baloian started the company in 1986 with his son Tim who currently serves as the company’s president.  Baloian Farms is a long-time Western Growers member and grows peppers, onions and other vegetables in California, Arizona, Mexico and Chile.
