WG President and CEO Tom Nassif discussed the framework for a joint-food safety initiative between Western Growers and the Produce Marketing Association during a panel presentation at the PMA Board Meeting this week in Austin, Texas. Nassif’s remarks highlighted the need to build greater accountability throughout the supply chain.

“Western Growers and PMA have a long history of working together on supply chain issues,” Nassif said. “Together, we will push for good buying practices that make food safety visible at each touch point – from the farm to the retailers and food service providers.”

The WG-PMA Food Safety Initiative was formed in October as an effort to increase consumer confidence in produce safety through a collaborative partnership between Western Growers, PMA, and other key stakeholder associations and companies. The two organizations are committed to working together to ensure that food safety standards are effectively and consistently applied at every point in the supply chain.

The panel also included Dr. Bob Whitaker, Chief Scientific Officer, Produce Marketing Association, and Bill Marler, a foodborne illness attorney.
