The Senate Judiciary Committee continued its markup Tuesday of S. 744, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act. The Committee will consider Title II, the agricultural component, likely later this week. The House Judiciary Committee is introducing and considering individual immigration bills, which has included introduction of an agricultural guestworker bill and E-Verify bill last month. Those bills will be the subject of a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Thursday.

The Farm Bill passed out of the Senate Agriculture Committee Tuesday 15-5 and will head to the floor next week. The Committee rejected a variety of amendments to nutrition, conservation and commodity title programs that would have made major policy changes to the bill.

The Senate version includes research, pest and disease mitigation, trade, nutrition, risk management and other priority programs that help to ensure fruit and vegetable producers can compete in the marketplace and meet the needs of American consumers both now and into the future.

Western Growers Board of Directors will be Washington, DC next week meeting with Members of Congress and the Administration at a very timely moment on both of these critical issues.
