Officials and legislators tour Salinas with Western Growers.

On Friday June 7, Western Growers sponsored and helped organize a farm tour in Salinas.  Western Growers staff were joined by California Department of Food and Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross, Assemblymember Luis Alejo (D-Watsonville), and Assemblymember Marc Levine (D-San Rafael).  Staff from Senator Anthony Cannella’s office and Senator Bill Monning’s office also attended.  Participants visited Fresalba Farms and learned about the challenges facing California strawberry growers on labor, water, pesticide management, and land-use issues. Additional stops were made at Taylor Farms and Mann Packing Company in Salinas where the groups toured processing and packing operations and learned of the companies’ sophisticated methods of ensuring that safe and healthy produce is continuously available nationwide.
