On Thursday, August 1, Congressmen Jeff Denham (R-CA) and Tony Cardenas (D-CA) convened a panel discussion on the economic benefits of immigration reform. Joining them to discuss the issue was Frederick R. Treyz, Ph.D., REMI CEO & chief economist, and Western Growers Senior Director of Federal Government Affairs Ken Barbic.
Congressmen Denham and Cardenas emphasized the need for Republicans and Democrats to be working together to solve the immigration crisis facing our country. Even though they come from different sides of the aisle and vastly different districts they share the view that action should be taken in a comprehensive manner.
Dr. Treyz presented on the recent study released by REMI on the macroeconomic benefits of immigration reform, all sectors, even those not directly impacted by immigration will benefit from reform legislation.
Barbic focused on the specific needs and challenges facing agriculture and the economic and security imperative for Congress to take action on this critical issue.
Following the discussion, Rep. Denham tweeted: “I want to work on this once in my lifetime. I want a real fix.”
