Last week, both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives passed the conference report for H.R. 3080, the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) of 2014.  This water infrastructure bill is significant because it ensures that the maintenance and needed upgrades of the inland waterways system is achieved in a timely and cost efficient manner.  The inland waterways system includes ports, channels, locks, levees, and dams.

This week, the California Assembly will vote on a labor union-sponsored bill that would create joint liability for growers who use farm labor contractors.   Western Growers is part of a large coalition working to stop AB 1897 (Hernandez, D-West Covina).  We strongly urge you to contact your Assembly member to urge him/her to vote against this bill.  Use the Western Growers Grassroots Action Center to submit your opposition to this legislation.

Statement of Dennis Nuxoll, Vice President of Federal Government Affairs for Western Growers, on the passage of the Emergency Drought Relief Act by the U.S. Senate:

“We are pleased that the drought bill has moved out of the Senate.  The effort by Senators Feinstein and Boxer to convince their Republican and Democratic colleagues of California’s pressing need for action has been commendable, and we applaud that significant effort.  We are also aware of Members of the California Republican House delegation to reach out to Senate Republicans to lend help and sincerely appreciate it.
