Last year, the proposed hourly rate for Canada Food Inspection Agency Destination Inspection Services (DIS) was to be increased from $145 per hour to $190. However, over the past year, CFIA-DIS has been studying its business model and implementing new internal management practices. Starting today, April 1, 2014, fees will be $171 per hour. Also, the call-out fee of $50 previously applied for each invoice is revoked and a cancellation fee of $70 will be applied when an inspection request is cancelled. There will also be additional positive changes in fee calculation and administration such as greater precision in invoicing for services.
Remember, CFIA-DIS inspection certificates are considered prima facie evidence offering Western Growers members an added level of protection should quality concerns arise. DIS provides inspection services that are of direct benefit to the fresh produce industry and you should always endeavor to insist on a CFIA inspection. The CFIA Destination Inspection Services (DIS) is entering its final phase of a three-year process to implement full cost recovery. Accordingly, this third round will see CFIA-DIS increase the overall rate of recovery to 100 percent.
