The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently conducting an assignment to collect and test 240 samples of domestically produced fresh-cut cantaloupe from processors, warehouses and distribution centers. This assignment began in late June and will continue over the next 12 months. The target pathogens are Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.

AB 616 (Mark Stone, Scotts Valley) – a UFW bill that would erode farmworkers’ choice in whether or not to join a union and threaten employers’ due process rights – has passed the Assembly and Senate and now heads to the desk of California Governor Gavin Newsom. The initial vote count to move the bill was 42-14. Western Growers will share the final vote count once it is tallied.

More than 150 tech experts, educators, government leaders and agricultural stakeholders gathered during the AgtechX Ed Summit at Reedley College last Wednesday to discuss how to transition the ag workforce to master rapidly developing on-farm technology. The half-day event resulted in new and innovative ideas for upskilling the agricultural workforce to meet critical labor needs, with “collaboration” ranking as the top solution.
