Cal-OSHA Issues Second Heat Advisory of 2014

With temperatures around the state expected to again reach triple digits this week and strong Santa Ana winds throughout portions of the state, the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) issued its second heat warning for 2014. Cal/OSHA, the division of DIR that protects workers from health and safety hazards, issued the warning to employers as temperatures in much of California are expected to be well above normal. The unseasonably high temperatures make the risk of serious injury from heat illness to outdoor workers, such as farm laborers, a serious threat.

Catastrophic Events Still Largely Uninsured

A recent study by global insurance giant Munich Re indicates that although the number of natural disasters has increased five-fold in the last 30 years, many people still do not buy insurance to protect themselves or their property from catastrophic events. Although no one knows for certain the cause of the increase in natural disasters, the frequency and strength of cataclysmic disasters seemingly continue to increase from one year to the next.
