In the Agriculture & the Law column appearing in the January 2014 issue of the Western Grower & Shipper (WG&S) magazine, it was erroneously reported that the California minimum wage will increase from $8.00 to $9.00 per hour on January 1, 2014. In fact, the effective date of the first of two scheduled increases is July 1, 2014.

On December 24, 2013, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published the rule called “Focused Mitigation Strategies to Protect Food Against Intentional Adulteration,” which will require domestic and foreign food registered facilities to assess their operations to address hazards that may be intentionally introduced by acts of terrorism. This means that these food facilities would be required to have a written food defense plan.

On Friday, Governor Jerry Brown issued a drought declaration for the state of California which was received favorably by the agriculture community.  Upon the Governor’s announcement, Western Grower’s president and CEO, Tom Nassif, issued the following statement to the media:

“We appreciate the action taken by Governor Brown today.  Drought conditions are wreaking havoc on farmers in California, especially in the San Joaquin Valley.  The situation is dire and requires the full attention of state and federal leaders which is why the declaration is so important.
