Grant Cycle Opens for Oakland-Area Schools - School Garden Program Eligible For K-12

Irvine, Calif. - Western Growers Foundation, through the generous support of WG Member HMC Farms will offer grants to K-12 schools in the Oakland school district to provide children with an edible, nutritious and educational school garden experience. Grant applications are available now through Jan. 31, 2013. The grants include a check for $1,000, a school garden kit and fruit from HMC Farms.

Barnard Takes Chairmanship at 87th Annual Meeting

Scottsdale, Ariz.–At its 87th Annual Meeting Monday, the Western Growers Board of Directors installed Stephen J. Barnard, president and CEO of Mission Produce, Inc. as the new chairman of the organization.  Barnard will take over volunteer leadership responsibilities from outgoing Chairman Mike Jarrard, CEO of Mann Packing Company.

Gilroy Alumnus Gives Back - Funds Will Help Garden at San Martin/Gwinn School

IRVINE, Calif. One Central Coast Elementary School will receive a generous check to help its students learn the value of farming and nutrition thanks to a family of two alumni. Gilroy farmer Joe Aeillo will present a check to San Martin/Gwinn School Wednesday. The money will help support the school garden at the elementary school, where students get hands-on learning about what it takes to grow fruits and vegetables, the importance of good nutrition and the wonderful sense of accomplishment of eating what one grows.
