As the California drought emergency continues, the State Water Resources Control Board (The Board) issued a notice late last week advising all water rights holders that if hydrologic conditions do not significantly improve in the next several months, curtailments in 2015 can be expected to be the same as or exceed those seen in 2014.  In its notice, the Board encouraged water holders to plan ahead and to look into additional conservation measures and alternative water supplies.

Officials from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have reinstated inspection requirements for U.S. grown onions destined for Canada as of January 21, 2015.  The reinstatement applies to onions marketed fresh to consumers or intended for bulk or further processing/packaging and was prompted by the lack of a reciprocal agreement between the two countries that would have eliminated inspections on both sides of the border.  This affects both California and Arizona grower/shippers.

Western Growers is once again participating in the annual California Agricultural Wage and Benefit Survey conducted by Farm Employers Labor Service (FELS®).  Not to be confused with the Western Growers Professional Compensation & HR Practices Surveys, the FELS Wage & Benefit survey provides a market reference for growers making wage and benefit decisions for 14 on-jobs including: supervisors and foremen; mechanics; equipment operators and tractor drivers; irrigators; and general laborers.  This survey is used to develop a reference on California market conditions.
