Western Growers and the rest of the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance (SCFBA) applauded the passage of the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2013 (Farm Bill) in the U.S. Senate yesterday with a bipartisan vote of 66-27. The legislation addresses many of the critical priorities outlined by the SCFBA and continues the support of specialty crops that was established in the 2008 Farm Bill.

The Western Growers Board of Directors wrapped up a productive week in Washington Thursday. Members of the group, led by WG Chairman Steve Barnard and CEO and President Tom Nassif, focused their energy on immigration reform, farm bill issues and food safety regulations.

Members of the Western Growers Board of Directors are meeting in Washington, D.C. this week at a crucial moment for critical issues in the agriculture industry. While there, the board is meeting with national opinion and policy makers to discuss the need for immigration reform, specialty crop concerns with passage of the Farm Bill, food safety regulations and other pressing issues.

On Tuesday, the House voted 257-167 to pass legislation already approved by the Senate that will avert the government from going over the so-called “fiscal cliff” by increasing taxes on those making more than $400,000 ($450,000 for couples) along with postponing sequestration cuts for two months.  The agreement also includes a one-year (through Sept. 2013) extension of the 2008 Farm Bill.  Not all programs from the 2008 bill survived however,
