Western Growers is among more than 70 organizations who are asking California Governor Gavin Newsom to provide a short-term pause in enforcement of AB 5 via Executive Order in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court declining late last month to consider a challenge to the law brought by the California Trucking Association.

In a letter to Newsom, the organizations ask for the pause as well as calling for labor and industry to come to the table to negotiate a path forward to preserve small business trucking in the state and prevent further disruptions to the supply chain.

On June 13, the U.S. House passed S. 3580, the Ocean Shipping Reform Act with overwhelming bipartisan support. This bill – which passed earlier this year with bipartisan support in the U.S. Senate - will crack down on unreasonable practices by container shipping lines, bolster U.S. enforcement against uncompetitive carrier practices and improve transparency for exporters.

On March 22, the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation passed S. 3580, the Ocean Shipping Reform Act. This bill aims to crack down on unreasonable practices by container shipping lines, bolster U.S. enforcement against uncompetitive carrier practices and improve transparency for exporters. The bill also works to ensure that carriers (e.g. container shipping lines) may not unreasonably decline to export cargo.

Western Growers has proactively worked to support OSRA and its progression through the House and Senate.
