January 2010- Focus On Arizona

It’s no secret that Arizona has major budget problems and it is a foregone conclusion that most state agencies are going to be asked to cut back once again in fiscal year 2011 (July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011). And it should also be no secret that the Arizona Department of Agriculture will find it basically impossible to cut more money from its budget without impacting the level of its service.

“We’ve had major reductions in fiscal year ’08 and fiscal year ’09,” said John Carravette, the director of ADA’s Plant Services Division. “In the past several years our division has reduced our work force 56 percent. Since 2002, we’ve had a 76 percent staff reduction. The agency as a whole (ADA) is actually operating at a budget level less than when we were founded in 1991. And that does not count for inflation or just necessary increases in operating expenses.”
