In response recent public statements made by President Trump and members of his Cabinet indicating that the U.S. may withdraw from NAFTA, Western Growers sent a letter urging the Administration to modernize, not terminate NAFTA.

In the letter, WG President and CEO Tom Nassif cites the economic benefits that NAFTA has provided the domestic fresh produce industry and stated, “…withdrawing from NAFTA is not an option. The disruption created from such a move would be a disaster for U.S. produce companies.”

In the final hours to sign or veto bills sent to him by the California Legislature, Governor Brown vetoed AB 313 by Assemblymember Adam Gray, a Western Growers-supported bill that would have inserted much-needed balance into the state’s water rights enforcement activities.

The current system gives the State Water Resources Control Board (Water Board) authority to not only allocate water rights and permits, but to unilaterally enforce these rights and mete out punishment if they believe there has been a violation by a water user.

Recently Senator Feinstein has come under fire for comments she made concerning the need to have “patience” with respect to President Trump. Senator Feinstein was expressing her hope, which she admitted was perhaps fleeting, that President Trump can become a better President than he has, in her opinion, shown to date. Since making those comments the Senator has come under fire by Democrat activists and even elected leaders like state Senate President pro tem Kevin De Leon. That is unfortunate.

This week, after receiving the bill from the California Assembly, the Senate Industrial Relations and Labor Committee advanced AB 450, legislation that puts private employers in a no-win situation between federal immigration enforcement and state enforcement by punishing employers who voluntarily comply with federal authorities. As has been previously communicated, Western Growers is part of a large coalition opposed to the bill. The bill will be considered next in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
