This week, after receiving the bill from the California Assembly, the Senate Industrial Relations and Labor Committee advanced AB 450, legislation that puts private employers in a no-win situation between federal immigration enforcement and state enforcement by punishing employers who voluntarily comply with federal authorities. As has been previously communicated, Western Growers is part of a large coalition opposed to the bill. The bill will be considered next in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

In an effort to return power to the states and provide regulatory certainty to farmers and businesses, the Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Army, and Army Corps of Engineers have taken the first of a two-step process to redefine 'waters of the U.S.’ (WOTUS). President Trump issued an Executive Order this past February clearing the way for the initiative.

Two recent court judgments against the United Farm Workers (UFW) have floated past most of the news media, and apparently our elected lawmakers in Sacramento, without a hint of irony. In March, the Monterey County Superior Court awarded more than $1.1 million in penalties and unpaid wages against the UFW stemming from a class action claim that the union misclassified as “exempt” 23 of its own employees and failed to pay them overtime or let them take lunch breaks.

Last Friday, Western Growers teamed with partner Arizona agriculture organizations to host an agricultural tour for a bi-partisan group of legislative interns from the Arizona House and Senate. The tour, which took place at facilities west of downtown Phoenix, is an annual event designed to educate up-and-coming young professionals on the importance of agriculture in Arizona.

Across the country, Americans are observing President-elect Trump’s transition to the White House with a range of emotions. While we may have different feelings about his victory, we can probably agree on this: The Trump presidency will be unpredictable. And our soon-to-be Commander-in-Chief won’t be affected by protests (from establishment types) that he shouldn’t do or say something only because, “We’ve never done it that way.”
