The Vegas Strip will glow a little brighter this November 4th when Gary Pasquinelli is honored as this year’s Award of Honor recipient during the 89th Annual Meeting in Las Vegas.  The CEO and co-owner of Pasquinelli Produce Company -- and Western Growers’ Board member -- will be honored for a lifetime’s worth of work and achievements in the produce industry.

Members of the Western Growers Board of Directors convened this week in Orange County under the leadership of Chairman Bruce Taylor to deliberate the top issues affecting the industry. High on the list of issues discussed were the drought and regulatory restrictions on water supply, food safety, labor union activities and immigration reform.  Several standing committees featured guest speakers.  Dr. Jay Famiglietti, a senior water cycle scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and David Orth, general manager of the Kings River Conservation District, presented to the Water Committee; Amy Wolfe, president and CEO of AgSafe, presented to the Labor Committee; and Dr. Jerry Baron, executive director of IR-4 presented to the Food Safety, Science & Technology Committee.

If you didn’t renew your WG Membership by June 21, you missed the opportunity to automatically get registered for our $500 contest drawing.  This week, one lucky renewing member found out how real the contest was when Rob Steinmann, our Member Relations Manager, contacted Jessica Cueto at Pablo’s Produce in Oxnard, California, to let her know that Pablo’s was randomly selected as this year’s Annual Dues contest winner.

This year’s 89th Annual Meeting being held from November 2-5 in Las Vegas promises to be a star-studded event.  What else would you expect when you hold a meeting in a city that bills itself as the “Entertainment Capital of the World?”

Besides the likes of former Tonight Show Host, Jay Leno, who will entertain guests at the Award Dinner, attendees will also get to see the BRAVO Network’s Top Chef finalist Louis Maldonado in action on November 3rd in the Bellagio’s Tuscany Demonstration Kitchen. Chef Louis plans to dazzle the crowd by preparing a wide-variety of fresh fruit and vegetables in unique and interesting ways.

Hoping to win some loot while attending WG’s 89th Annual Meeting in Las Vegas?  Well, the Vegas Strip isn’t going to be the only place you can make that happen.  The men’s and women’s 2014 Golf Tournament with breakfast and lunch, sponsored by Rabobank and being held at the award-winning championship TPC Las Vegas golf course, will feature a high-roller, Las Vegas themed “Million Dollar Hole-in-One Opportunity” open to all tournament players.
