School Gardens

Recently, five Yuma schools received $1,500 from Western Growers Foundation to grow and sustain their fruits and veggie learning gardens:  Alice Byrne Elementary, Kofa High School, St. Francis of Assisi Elementary, Gowan Science Academy and Yuma Lutheran School.  Rachel and Robby Barkley of Barkley Ag joined the ground breaking at Alice Byrne on September 27, 2013.

In addition to growing good nutritious food in their garden, many Harrington Elementary School students are growing their language skills. While visiting the garden, ELD (English Language Development) students draw pictures of the vegetables and write two sentences in their plant journal.  When the students return to class, the sentences and art are shared

On a rainy day in late March, Drew and Chelsea (McClarty) Ketelsen of HMC Farms and WG’s Paula Olson made a whirlwind tour around Oakland, Calif. The McClarty family donated $10,000 to the Western Growers Foundation and, after a rigorous application process, it awarded several Oakland schools $1,000 each to grow and sustain a fruit and vegetable garden.
