On March 24 and 25, more than 60 industry, government, and academia representatives convened at the fourth annual “Opportunities in Phytosanitary Irradiation for Fresh Produce Workshop” held at Chapman University in Orange, CA.  The workshop was designed to provide diverse stakeholders with a regular forum to discuss the appropriate role of irradiation in the U.S. fresh produce industry.   The event was co-hosted by USDA-APHIS and Chapman University.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) issued a medfly quarantine for the Central Los Angeles area after several pests were detected between March 3 and March 18.  Detections were found in traps between March 3 and March 12 and in backyard fruit on March 18.   The quarantine affects all growers, wholesalers, retailers and local residents in the 88-square mile quarantine zone near the University of Southern California.

Tomorrow, Wednesday March 26, Western Growers will conduct a Lunch & Learn webinar updating the industry on the use of robotics for growing and harvesting specialty crops. 

This webinar will provide a brief overview of the current status of robotics in our industry and will highlight the causes of rapid automation during growing activities as well as the future, economic factors and limitations of robotic harvesting. A few examples of technologies currently used will be shared, including a lettuce thinner, intelligent grapevine pruner and a robotic harvester being used for strawberries.
