Irvine, CA (February 27, 2009) -Statement by Tom Nassif, president and CEO, Western Growers Association:

“We support the Governor’s proclamation of emergency regarding the water crisis in California. This makes it clear that this is a problem for all Californians, not just those in the rural communities or on farms. All California residents, rural and urban alike, are affected, and should now realize the necessity of getting behind a state water infrastructure bond - a measure that will increase water storage and conveyance so these kinds of emergencies may not affect us so adversely in the future.”

Western Growers is an agricultural trade association whose members from Arizona and California grow, pack and ship ninety percent of the fresh fruits, nuts and vegetables grown in California and seventy five percent of those commodities in Arizona. This totals about half of the nation’s fresh produce.
