Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) staff has confirmed that Cal/OSHA will issue citations to operations that transport workers on tractor-mounted transportation units (TTUs).  TTUs are commonly used to transport irrigators from one end of a field to the other and for other on-farm transportation. DOSH encourages farm employers to apply for and be approved for an experimental variance, a kind of testing program or permit, before continuing to use such equipment. To date only one farming operation, Grimmway Farms, has applied for and received an experimental variance in the past year.

Members are advised to discontinue using TTUs unless and until they have been issued a variance, and to consider alternative forms of on-farm transportation. For more information about the variance process, contact Jason Resnick  WG’s vice president and general counsel at (949) 885-2253.
