There was fundraising galore for the WG Foundation as well as laughter at WG’s Award Dinner held Tuesday evening at the Sheraton Waikiki hotel. But before the entertainment by comedian John Pinette, plenty of love and appreciation was demonstrated for Jon Vessey, this year’s recipient of the Award of Honor. Joined by peers, friends and admirers, and with his family in the audience, Jon Vessey was given a heartfelt introduction by his son Jack.
“My dad taught me it wasn’t just about us, it was about the industry,” said Jack. “He fought for the industry. He fought for all of us. Thank you, Dad.” Jack also congratulated the selection committee saying, “You picked the right guy for this award. No one has more integrity than my father.”
Jon Vessey accepted the award saying, “I am truly humbled,” and followed with an introduction of each of his family members, including several grandchildren, as well as his best friend, Tom Church of Church Brothers, L.L.C. in Salinas. His respect for Western Growers was evident when he said it was “the most prestigious ag organization in the country.”
Jon Vessey was also honored by the University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences with a Lifetime Achievement Award. There to present the honor was Shane Burgess, dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
