Final Tally of House Farm Bill Vote

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted 251 – 162 to pass a new Farm Bill.  Passing this bill has been a long-time coming, having been debated for nearly two years.  The Senate is likely to vote (and likely to pass) the bill early next week.  Contact your Senators NOW and tell them to vote YES when it comes up for a vote.

This Farm Bill is a significant advance for the fruit and vegetable industry and growers here in the West.  Among the many highlights are resources for pest and disease identification, interdiction and prevention; funds for research and development directed at short, medium and long-term goals has been increased from previous years; federal resources to help producers comply with regulations like the ESA or Clean Water Act are available; money to help upgrade equipment to comply with air quality standards or improve water utilization is available; and money to teach school children about healthy eating and thus increase the number of people in the next generation that eat our products has been increased.

Western Growers worked actively to shape this bill in order to benefit our producers.  We are pleased it has passed the House, look forward to it passing the Senate and then we will work to ensure that as implemented it can be of maximum benefit to each of our members who rely on it.
