An important crossroads for U.S./Canadian trade relations is upon us and Western Growers urgently needs your help to make an impression with our northern neighbor. This Friday, February 14th, the Government of Canada (GoC) is holding a webinar to seek input on enhancing trading practices and financial risk mitigation for the Canadian fresh produce sector.
What does that mean for producers looking to sell in Canada? Everything. This is may be the last opportunity to voice your opinion and offer input to Canadian government about providing equivalent USDA PACA protections to U.S. shippers -- the same protections that Canadians enjoy when shipping to the U.S.
Since President Obama and Prime Minister Harper announced the Regulatory Cooperation Council (RCC) in December 2011, both Canadian and U.S. produce industries have researched the legality and documented that the best available pathway forward for a harmonized approach in both countries for failure to pay issues. The consensus solution voiced by U.S. and Canadian industry is the PACA trust equivalent.
The GoC will use this webinar to gage interest from the U.S. produce industry as to whether they should move forward with proposal. Therefore, we are asking that you identify AT LEAST one associate in your company who can spend 30 minutes THIS FRIDAY to help demonstrate to Canadian Government officials that our industry is committed to this solution. It is IMPERATIVE we have as many individuals participating as possible.
Following the discussion period, the GoC will review and consider the comments received. A summary of key issues raised during the discussions will also be prepared and presented at a later date.
If you need more background or if you would like to participate by asking questions during the Q&A session following the presentation, please contact Matt McInerney.
We can get “PACA Canada,” but only with YOUR Help!
