This week, the California Assembly will vote on a labor union-sponsored bill that would create joint liability for growers who use farm labor contractors.   Western Growers is part of a large coalition working to stop AB 1897 (Hernandez, D-West Covina).  We strongly urge you to contact your Assembly member to urge him/her to vote against this bill.  Use the Western Growers Grassroots Action Center to submit your opposition to this legislation.

Members of the Western Growers’ Board of Directors who attended this week’s Washington, D.C. Board Meeting left town clear about one thing: despite what is being said in the media about immigration reform being dead, there still remains a window of opportunity for action this year. Led by Western Growers Chairman Bruce Taylor and CEO and President Tom Nassif, members of WG’s Board came to D.C. with messages for members of each party.

Members of the Western Growers’ Board of Directors are convening on Capitol Hill this week for the annual Washington, D.C. Board meeting.  Members will be meeting with administration officials as well as lawmakers and staff from both the House and Senate to discuss issues critical to the agriculture industry.  Tops on the list of issues:  immigration reform and water issues.

Earlier this week, the Western Growers’ Executive Committee and Arizona board members joined forces in Phoenix for annual Leadership meetings.   The WG directors, joined by WG President and CEO Tom Nassif and key staff, met with legislators, candidates, administration officials, political strategists and the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry to discuss the 2014 elections and what they could mean for the future of Arizona and the fresh produce industry.  Immigration reform was a key discussion topic in the meetings.
