The Western Growers July 2017 Board of Directors Meeting concluded today. From July 25 to 27, WG Board Members gathered in Orange County to guide WG’s actions on state and federal legislative and regulatory priorities impacting Western Growers members, as well as provide feedback on important initiatives being undertaken by the association. Among the issues discussed:

Cory Lunde

This week, after receiving the bill from the California Assembly, the Senate Industrial Relations and Labor Committee advanced AB 450, legislation that puts private employers in a no-win situation between federal immigration enforcement and state enforcement by punishing employers who voluntarily comply with federal authorities. As has been previously communicated, Western Growers is part of a large coalition opposed to the bill. The bill will be considered next in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

In an effort to return power to the states and provide regulatory certainty to farmers and businesses, the Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Army, and Army Corps of Engineers have taken the first of a two-step process to redefine 'waters of the U.S.’ (WOTUS). President Trump issued an Executive Order this past February clearing the way for the initiative.

On Tuesday, following the official swearing-in of Sonny Perdue as the new U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, President Trump held a roundtable discussion with 15 farmers that included Western Growers’ Board Member A.G. Kawamura. The discussion focused on the issues of agricultural trade, regulatory reform, rural investment and infrastructure, the Farm Bill, and agricultural labor.
