DIR Launches Web-based COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave Tool

The Department of Industrial Relations and its California Labor Commissioner’s Office recently launched a web-based tool that offers key information on the new 2021 COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave law. The web tool is available here: https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/covid-psl/

This tool is available in both English and Spanish and provides employers and their workers easy access to information on workers’ paid sick leave options. Through the web tool, workers and employers can confirm if they are eligible for COVID-19 supplemental paid sick leave by answering short simple questions on the impact COVID-19 is having on an employee’s ability to work.

The new law applies to employers in the state of California with more than 25 employees and California employees who are not able to work or telework for any of seven reasons detailed in the legislation. The leave time now also applies to attending a COVID-19 vaccine appointment and recovering from symptoms related to the vaccine, among other reasons. Eligible employees are entitled to up to 80 hours of supplemental paid sick leave. The law, which is retroactive to January 1, 2021, is in effect until September 30, 2021.
