Sonia Salas
Western Growers, Senior Director, Science & Technology

Sonia E. Salas joined Western Growers as Senior Loss Control Consultant in October 2007 and was assigned to assist Western Growers Insurance Services clients with their loss control and safety needs. Prior to joining Western Growers, Sonia managed food safety and quality assurance systems and implemented federal/state requirements in the food industry. She has directed, coordinated and performed bilingual workshops on food safety, food quality and workers safety among other subjects. She has over ten years of food and workplace safety experience. In April 2009, Sonia was promoted to Science & Technology Manager and later on January 2013 to Director of Science & Technology. As director of this division, she is responsible for monitoring scientific and technological advancements and policy changes to keep Western Growers members abreast of these developments. 

Sonia has played a key role in the development, update and implementation of several commodity specific food safety guidelines. She manages and administers government grants as well as represents Western Growers among different groups and coalitions. Sonia has published several articles in the Western Grower & Shipper Magazine and has started and continued strategic alliances with entities such as NASA, the FDA, universities and private organizations serving agriculture. 

Sonia is member of the Honor Society of Agriculture, Gamma Sigma Delta. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the Agricultural Pan-American School “Zamorano” in Honduras, Central America. She also holds a Master of Science degree in Agriculture from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
