In October 2018, the Center for Food Safety and the Center for Environmental Health sued the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for failing to meet statutory deadlines found in 2011’s Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and the Administrative Procedures Act.

The Center for Food Safety and the Center for Environmental Health said that under FSMA, the FDA must designate “high risk” food that requires additional record-keeping to protect public health. The original FSMA deadline for FDA to designate the “high risk” foods was 2012.

In an effort to promote dialogue between different sectors of California agriculture regarding ways to prevent future foodborne illness outbreaks, the California Department of Food and Agriculture in collaboration with the University of California and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are bringing both the livestock and produce communities together in a series of workshops called Good Ag Neighbors. The first workshop kicked off today at the Desert Research and Extension Center in Holtville.

Western Growers (WG) is hosting a Produce Safety Alliance (PSA) Growers Training Course. This course is one way to fulfill the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule requirement, which states that “at least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.”
