Ryan Talley is Elected New Western Growers Chairman of the Board

November 11th, 2019

IRVINE, Calif. (November 11, 2019) – Western Growers is pleased to announce that Ryan Talley, co-owner and farm manager of Talley Farms, will assume the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors. Talley, who has been committed to agriculture for more than three decades, will serve as chairman for a one-year term, taking over the responsibilities of outgoing chairman, Ron Ratto, president of Ratto Bros., Inc.

“Ryan’s successful tenure at Talley Farms and his significant personal accomplishments make him the ideal choice to be the next Western Growers’ Chairman of the Board of Directors,” said Western Growers President and CEO Tom Nassif. “With his stellar track record on the board, there is no doubt in my mind that Ryan, along with the rest of the Western Growers Board, is poised to truly lead the organization and the fresh produce industry to even greater heights.”

Talley spearheads Talley Farms, a diversified family-owned farming company and grower- shipper of bell peppers, cilantro, spinach, lettuce, Napa cabbage, avocados, lemons and grapes. His passion for agriculture dates back to 1985 when he first started picking beans at the age of 12, alongside his brother, Todd, and cousin, Brian. Talley earned his bachelor of science in business from Purdue University and subsequently returned to the farm to help write the computer programs Talley Farms currently uses for production, planning, their mechanic ship and the nursery. The farm is committed to supplying consumers with the best and freshest produce that California has to offer, following the company’s vision to strive for “Excellence in Everything.”

“Western Growers has been a staple organization in the agriculture industry for nearly a century, and Talley Farms is proud to have been a part of its legacy since 1970,” said Talley. “I am both eager and honored to embark on this new role as Western Growers’ Chairman of the Board of Directors, working with the rest of the board to further our commitment to the industry.”

Talley was named as 2020 chairman during Western Growers 94th Annual Meeting in Maui, Hawaii. During the meeting, the Board also selected Albert Keck of Hadley Date Gardens as senior vice chairman; Stuart Woolf of Woolf Enterprises as vice chairman; Carol Chandler of Chandler Farms as treasurer; and Vic Smith of JV Smith Companies as secretary.

FDA to Conduct Romaine Lettuce Surveillance Sampling Assignment

November 12th, 2019

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently shared with produce industry representatives their surveillance efforts of raw agricultural commodity romaine lettuce. This sampling assignment includes the collection of romaine lettuce samples to test for Salmonella spp. and Shiga Toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). Starting this month (November 2019), the FDA plans to collect 270 samples over the course of a year, with increased frequency in March/April and October/November— production transition periods.

This assignment is designed to help the FDA, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as state public health agencies identify sources of contamination and help with the development of target investigations into foodborne illness outbreaks. If the FDA discovers Salmonella spp. or STEC in a collected sample, the agency will contact the firm of the findings and work with them to ensure the health of their consumers.

FDA, CDC Report 67 Cases of E.coli Illnesses Linked to Romaine

November 26th, 2019

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated their notices regarding the current E. coli O157:H7 outbreak, linked to romaine lettuce from the Salinas, California growing region.

According to the CDC, there is now a total of 67 E. coli O157:H7 reported illnesses, an increase of 27 illnesses since last reported on November 22. The illness onset date was previously reported as November 10, 2019; the updated advisory reports the most recent illness onset date as November 14, 2019.

Considering there is a wait period between the time a case is reported and then confirmed, we were expecting that these numbers would change since the first notices were posted last week.

For full details, please access the FDA and CDC websites.

WG Offers Three More Public Sessions Before Year’s End

November 14th, 2019

Western Growers’ HR Learning and Development Manager Anna Bilderbach has been delivering both public and private Management 101: Introduction to Supervision and Harassment Prevention trainings to WG members throughout California.

As previously reported in Spotlight, Senate Bill (SB) 778 California requires employers with five or more employees to provide the following:

  • a minimum of 2 hours of training and education regarding sexual harassment to all supervisory employees
  • at least 1 hour of training and education regarding sexual harassment to all nonsupervisory employees in California within six months of their assumption of a position

SB 778 permits employers who have provided training to an employee in 2019 to offer a “refresher” training to that employee two years thereafter (rather than the January 2021 deadline). This will avoid forcing employers who have already provided compliant training from having to do so twice in a single two-year period.

Western Growers is offering its members supervisory training through both public and private sessions. Supervisors can participate in one of our upcoming Public Sessions:

  • Santa Maria: November 19th
  • Bakersfield: November 25th
  • Tulare: November 26th

Please contact Anna Bilderbach at (949) 379-3889 for additional information including scheduling and pricing.

Nominations Due for USDA Fruit & Vegetable Advisory Committee

November 19th, 2019

USDA is accepting nominations to fill three upcoming vacancies on its Fruit and Vegetable Industry Advisory Committee (FVIAC) next year. The deadline to submit is Thursday, November 21, 2019, with necessary paperwork postmarked by or before this date.

First established in 2001, FVIAC provides advice and recommendations to the Secretary of Agriculture on issues of importance to the produce industry – crop production, food safety, labor, and trade. Working groups on these topics provide greater depth and clarity in FVIAC’s responsibility to make informed decisions. Many Western Growers members have served in this capacity over the years, with three currently serving as 2018-2020 committee members: John Chandler of Chandler Farms in Selma, California; Jeff Huckaby of Grimmway Enterprises in Bakersfield, California; and Bruce Talbott of Talbott’s Mountain Gold in Palisade, Colorado.

Qualified candidates may nominate themselves, or someone can nominate another candidate who is interested, qualified, and agrees to the nomination. Nominees must currently work in one of the agricultural capacities within the supply chain, including growers, wholesalers, processors, retailers, importers/exporters, and industry associations. FVIAC members must serve at least one full two-year term (2020-2022) and attend two meetings per year in the Washington, D.C. region (approved expenses reimbursable by USDA).

Nomination packages can be submitted electronically by email to [email protected], or mailed to:

Darrell Hughes, U.S Department of Agriculture,

1400 Independence Avenue, SW.,

South Building-Room 2083-STOP 0235,

Washington, DC 20250-0235

Attn: Fruit and Vegetable Industry Advisory Committee
