Congressman Sam Farr Connects with Agtech Innovators at WGCIT

March 15th, 2016

Congressman Sam Farr visited the Western Growers Center for Innovation & Technology (WGCIT) last Thursday, where he had the opportunity to connect with agtech innovators and collaborate with Western Growers on ideas to further advance the ag industry.

While touring the WGCIT, Farr, who represents California’s Central Coast, learned more about the 13 start-up companies currently working out of the Center and the range of agtech solutions they each offer. He also heard about how the WGCIT directly connects entrepreneurs to Western Growers members, which is crucial for developing tailored products that solve growers’ biggest challenges and making immediate changes on farms with new technology.

Farr shared how he has been fighting for ways to keep agriculture viable in the Central Coast and is excited that WGCIT provides the next level of support to the industry. He stressed how agriculture is one of the largest economic drivers for the region and is thrilled that Western Growers is taking steps to significantly merge ag and tech. In the future, Farr hopes that the process that regulatory agencies require of growers to collect data will be simplified. He noted that a movement to coordinate and streamline the required data would be extremely helpful to both government compliance agencies and the agricultural industry.

A highlight of Farr’s visit was having the opportunity to meet with innovators such as Patrick Zelaya, CEO of HeavyConnect, Inc. Zelaya spoke to Farr about the company’s partnership with local universities to create a pathway from college to career for students with a passion for agriculture, technology and business.  Farr enjoyed hearing how HeavyConnect is helping raise the next generation in agtech in the Salinas region by prioritizing software engineering students in the local area when choosing interns.  The congressman ended his tour by stating how impressed he was with the WGCIT and is looking forward to seeing this venture grow.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Western Growers

March 17th, 2016

With more than half of Americans celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, the traditional Irish dish “corned beef and cabbage” has been put in the spotlight. And that’s great news for leafy greens! There is a 70 percent increase in cabbage shipments during the week of St. Patrick’s Day. This contributes to the 2.3 billion pounds of cabbage produced in the United States annually.

Western Growers has developed an infographic highlighting cabbage’s impact on this holiday. To download the graphic, along with other infographics created by Western Growers, click here

New Mandatory Organic Waste Recycling Requirements in California

March 17th, 2016

As result of the enactment of Assembly Bill 1826, new Mandatory Organic Waste Recycling requirements will take effect in California on and after April 1, 2016. Organic Waste is defined in the bill as food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, nonhazardous wood waste and food-soiled paper that is mixed in with food waste.

Impacted businesses should have been or will be contacted by their city or county regarding the new requirements to recycle all of the organic material they generate and the availability of organic waste recycling options. Compliance can be reached by one or any combination of the following actions:

  • Source-separate organic waste from other waste and subscribe to an organic waste recycling service that specifically includes collection and recycling of organic waste.
  • Recycle organic waste onsite, or self-haul for organics recycling.
  • Subscribe to an organic waste recycling service that includes mixed-waste processing that specifically recycles organic waste.
  • Sell or donate the generated organic waste.
  • Recycle the material on site, such as composting, anaerobic digestion, vermicomposting.

Click here for full details on the new mandatory organic waste recycling requirements.

Get Ready, Set, Pitch!

March 22nd, 2016

Start-up companies from around the world will be competing in an agtech pitch competition today and tomorrow to earn a coveted spot in the THRIVE Accelerator Program.

THRIVE Accelerator, which is hosted by SVG Partners and supported by sponsors such as Western Growers and Taylor Farms, is a highly-selective mentorship and investment program for agtech and foodtech startups. Of the 200 applications received this year, 35 have been chosen to travel to Salinas, Calif. to pitch their companies to a panel of judges and experts. Alec Leach, President, Taylor Farms; Vic Smith, President & CEO, JVSmith Companies; Joe Ferrari, Vice President, Ag Operations, Dole Fresh Vegetables; Dennis Donohue, President, Royal Rose Raddichio; and Hank Giclas, Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning, Science & Technology will be among the judges.

From this “Seed Camp,” 10 companies will be selected to participate in an 8-week acceleration program where they will have direct access to some of the world’s top agriculture companies. Once these 10 companies have gone through this extensive “boot camp” training, they will have the opportunity to pitch their product and solution one last time. One winner will be chosen and recognized at the Forbes AgTech Summit in July.

This year, part of the judging and review process will take place at the Western Growers Center for Innovation & Technology (WGCIT). Companies that are overseas and unable to travel to Salinas will be pitching to the judges virtually through Skype and Google Hangouts. The remaining competitors will be vetted and judged upstairs in the Taylor Farms’ offices. Judges will determine the winners based on strength of team leadership, business plans, competitive position and solution/product.

For more information, please contact Hank Giclas at (949) 885-2205.

Regulatory Update and Action Needed on 1,3-D

March 24th, 2016

The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) is in the process of updating restrictions and use limits for 1,3-D (e.g. Telone). For the last several years, DPR has undertaken an exhaustive scientific review of 1,3-D as part of DPR’s requirement to update conditions governing its use in California. We recently signed a letter urging DPR to adopt reasonable rules that recognize that growers of more than 50 crops depend on pre-plant soil fumigants like 1,3-D and that these products have a long history of being used and applied safely.

DPR is likely facing pressure from activists who want to unnecessarily restrict the use of this important crop protection tool. We want legislators representing growers to be aware that DPR’s actions could negatively impact their constituents farming operations. Please contact your legislators and urge them to weigh in with DPR.

DPR Holding Workshops to Gather Input on Field Fumigation Notification Requirements

March 29th, 2016

The Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) will be holding two workshops in April to gather input from stakeholders to help determine what notification is appropriate when field fumigation occurs. Western Growers has already and will continue to express serious concern with the direction DPR is headed on this issue. Western Growers’ members are encouraged to participate in these workshops, as DPR will use this input to develop a new regulation.

The current regulations require that residents be notified about certain applications of the soil-applied field fumigant, methyl bromide. Other fumigants also have product labels with different notification requirements as part of the emergency preparedness and response measures. Current methyl bromide notification regulations and fumigant labeling requirements will serve as the starting point to create a uniform requirement for all soil-applied field fumigants.

Additional information about current requirements or details about the workshops can be found here.

EPA Moves to Cancel Belt Insecticide Use

March 4th, 2016

Earlier last month, Bayer Crop Science refused a request by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to voluntarily cancel all uses of flubendiamide, or Belt, in the United States. As a result of Bayer’s refusal to voluntarily cancel the product, the EPA has issued a formal notice of its intent to cancel the product.

Belt is currently registered for use on more than 200 crops, including almonds, pistachios, lettuce, tomatoes and bell peppers. Despite the fact that the cancelation would be a significant loss for growers, the EPA still issued a notice of intent today to cancel all flubendiamide products produced by Bayer CropScience, LP and Nichino America, Inc. Although the EPA claims that the insecticide poses a risk to aquatic invertebrates, Bayer believes that that EPA’s methodology to evaluate the risk of crop protections tools is significantly flawed. Belt has an outstanding safety profile and is not an issue to human health, pollinators or beneficial insects. The disagreement is exclusively related to aquatic invertebrates in the sediment of rivers and ponds whose occurrence is predominantly concentrated in the Southeast of the United States.

EPA’s notice proposing to cancel all flubendiamide containing products is followed by a 30 day period, at the end of which Bayer will call for a review in an administrative law hearing. While under review, distributors, retailers and farmers can continue to buy, sell and use the product in their operations. United States and global tolerances are not and will not be affected by these proceedings.

Western Growers is currently assessing the Belt situation and is working with Bayer to determine the role the Association can take to help keep the product on the market. For more information, please contact Hank Giclas at (949) 885-2205.
