WG 93rd Annual Meeting – AgSharks Workshop Advances Agricultural Technologies

August 21st, 2018

AgSharks™ returns this year for another exciting competition. Western Growers’ AgSharks™ competition is the groundbreaking, collaborative forum that helps advance agricultural technologies within the fresh produce industry.

In 2017, start-up companies Hazel Technologies and AgVoice received a $2.25 million total investment offer from S2G Ventures (Seed 2 Growth). During this year’s session, an update will be given on the progress of their companies and technologies since the investment.

A new slate of agtech startups will then compete for venture capital investment opportunities. They will present new ideas in ag technology to a panel of AgSharks, consisting of member-judges and venture capitalists.

Expect another year of surprise and excitement as the AgSharks evaluate startups and technology for real-time investment opportunities. This workshop will happen on day three of the Annual Meeting – October 30 – from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

The 93rd Annual Meeting will take place October 28-31, 2018, at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa. Register today to take advantage of the early bird pricing and save $150. Early bird pricing ends on September 1st.

Senator John McCain: A True American Patriot and Hero

August 27th, 2018

Upon the passing of Senator John McCain – a true American patriot and hero – this past Saturday, the Western Growers family wishes to extend its deepest condolences and collective prayers to his family. While it is difficult to encapsulate the full impact of the life and career of Senator McCain, which will reverberate for generations of Americans to come, this one anecdote may suffice: congressional leaders from both parties have announced that Senator McCain will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol, an honor that has been bestowed but 31 times in the past 166 years of American history. Senator McCain was, and continues to be, in rare company.

For a more thorough treatment of Senator McCain’s impact on American politics and the agriculture industry, read The High Calling of Statesmanship: John McCain, by Western Growers President & CEO Tom Nassif.

Western Growers Partners with Agritech New Zealand to Connect Global AgTech Markets

Western Growers signs MOU with Agritech New Zealand to increase international  connectivity and support agricultural innovation

IRVINE, Calif. (August 30, 2018) – Western Growers (WG) has formalized a new strategic partnership with Agritech New Zealand to strengthen, share and accelerate the development of agricultural technologies, as well as help businesses in both countries access U.S. and New Zealand agriculture markets.

“We are currently facing a myriad of issues that are severely impacting agriculture and the production of food globally,” said Hank Giclas, Western Growers’ senior vice president, strategic planning, science & technology. “Building a two-way bridge for agricultural technology will result in international collaboration where we can create, transfer and share knowledge and experiences about new technologies that can help solve the industry’s most pressing issues.”

The signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishes a business relationship focused on providing in-market support for agtech companies in New Zealand. It also opens doors for New Zealand agtech companies to enter the U.S. market via WG’s Center for Innovation & Technology (WGCIT) in Salinas, California, and for U.S.-based agtech startups to access the New Zealand market and opportunities.

“Connecting our agriculture innovation ecosystems will benefit innovators, growers, investors, regulators, researchers and public stakeholders not only in our two countries, but around the globe,” said Peter Wren-Hilton, executive director at Agritech New Zealand. “We are excited to embark on this new partnership to foster economic growth in the U.S. and New Zealand through international connections and missions.”

The WGCIT provides a co-working space that offers agtech start-up companies access to training and mentorship; monthly seminars; regularly scheduled events; and exclusive events with WG members – specialty crop farmers in Arizona, California, Colorado and New Mexico. As part of the MOU, the community that Agritech New Zealand serves will now have access to WGCIT offerings. Additionally, the WGCIT will work with Agritech New Zealand to evaluate opportunities to conduct R&D trials with potential New Zealand partners during the Northern Hemisphere off season.

Western Growers Urges for Rapid Conclusion of Trade Conflicts

August 30th, 2018

Recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released a trade mitigation plan that falls substantially short of making fruit, vegetable and tree nut farmers whole for the damages they have incurred, and will continue to incur, as a result of the trade war with China.

In this video, Western Growers provides an initial analysis of the plan and details how a rapid and successful conclusion of our trade conflicts is the only outcome that will preserve our family farms.
