Ready to Swing at the WG Annual Meeting Golf Tournament?

September 19th, 2019

This year’s scramble golf tournament is back with a “Teeing it Up in the Tropics” theme! The tournament begins at 8:00 am on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, at the Wailea Golf Club in Maui, Hawaii. Join us as Golf Chair Craig Reade emcees this event!

This year’s golf course is designed to be fun for any player. Referred to as a tropical playground, the Wailea Emerald Course is over 6,800 yards big with memorable holes including #6, a par 4 downhill dogleg, measuring 415 yards from the white tees. Hole #11 is the longest on the course, 535 yards from the white tees, and usually into the wind, making it tough to reach the green. One of the more unusual features of the Emerald Course is the double green shared by holes #10 and #17. The green borders a 2.7 million gallon brackish water lake and is one of the most picturesque spots on the course!

Register today to reserve your spot!

It’s Not Too Late to Take Advantage of WG Harassment Prevention Training Sessions

September 24th, 2019

Recently, Western Growers’ HR Learning and Development Manager Anna Bilderbach delivered Harassment Prevention training to WG members in Orange Cove, CA, including Sanger Citrus, Mulholland Citrus, and Booth Ranches. As previously reported in spotlight, on August 15, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill (SB) 778, which updates the state’s sexual harassment training requirements.

With this new law, employers with five or more employees are required to provide the following:

  • A minimum of 2 hours of training and education regarding sexual harassment to all supervisory employees
  • And at least 1 hour of training and education regarding sexual harassment to all nonsupervisory employees in California within six months of their assumption of a position.

SB 778 permits employers who have provided training to an employee in 2019 to offer a “refresher” training to that employee two years thereafter (rather than the January 2021 deadline). This will avoid forcing employers who have already provided compliant training from having to do so twice in a single two-year period.

Western Growers offers its members supervisory training through both public and private sessions. Supervisors can participate in one of our upcoming Public Sessions:

  • Imperial: October 17th
  • Fresno: November 7th
  • Modesto: November 12th
  • Santa Maria: November 19th
  • Bakersfield: November 25th
  • Tulare: November 26th

Please contact Anna Bilderbach at (949) 379-3889 for additional information or to schedule onsite private sessions today.

Western Growers Comments on Proposed H-2A Rules

September 24th, 2019

As we reported here, the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration and Wage and Hour Division posted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to solicit public comment on proposed changes to improve the H-2A temporary agricultural labor certification program for the first time since 2010.

In comments submitted by Western Growers, the Grower-Shipper Association of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties, the Grower-Shipper Association of Central California, and Ventura County Agricultural Association, on September 24, 2019, the associations lauded DOL’s efforts to streamline and modernize the H-2A program, supporting specific proposed rule changes that will reduce unnecessary cost, inefficiency and frustration that now is part of the program.  The comment letter also objects to provisions that are inconsistent with the Administration’s stated intent to improve the program.

A copy of the complete Comment letter can be found here.
